In your opinion, what are currently the biggest challenges for painting companies and job-shop coaters?

Cost effectiveness and quality, particularly in-line with the increasing quality of finish expected by the automotive sector, and the sustainability of lowering reject rates. Right-first time (RFT) performances of painting lines is a final inspection procedure that painting lines use to judge the quality performance of the painting/coating process. Immediately before packaging, parts are inspected for defects in the finish, those that pass first-time, are added to the RFT count. Those that fail, will need to be reworked, or in a worse case, scrapped completely. Effective pre-treatment is therefore crucial in keeping quality high, and therefore RFT figures high to minimize costs.

From your standpoint, what are the best ways to optimize coating processes?

Aside from spraying application, effective pre-treatment is critical to keep RFT figures high to minimize rework and to reduce scrap.

What trends are emerging in your area of industrial painting technology?

A move away from traditional high capex, high CoO water/chemical-based pre-treatment plants, towards newer, state-of-the-art, selective, sustainable, and cost effective surface treatment with CO2 snow.
